The Women in Finance Network invites you to our upcoming event Diversity Matters: Diane Smith-Gander with South32 at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club on Tuesday 26th March. We encourage both men and women to attend the event and join the conversation about the benefits gender diversity brings to companies, and therefore to clients and shareholders.

The night will be opened by the  Hon. Simone McGurk, Minister of Child Protection; Women's Interests; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services.

Diane Smith-Gander is recognised as one of the most powerful women in the business community in Australia. Known for her enthusiastic, energetic and direct can-do style, Diane believes in building on strengths rather than addressing weaknesses. Diane has held a wide range of executive and non-executive roles and is a strong supporter of the business case for gender equity. Diane will lead a conversation with  South32  executives:

  • Nicole Duncan – Chief People and Legal Officer
  • Tim Cipolloni – Group Manager Treasury
  • Kristen Pelc – Principal Business Development
Come along to hear a thought-provoking discussion and intelligent and innovative insights about gender equity in the finance industry, with a specific focus on finance, investment and business development functions in the mining industry. The Women in Finance Network is an initiative of the CFA Society Perth.

Panel Speakers

Diane Smith-Gander | Panel Leader

Diane Smith-Gander is non-Executive director AGL Energy, Wesfarmers Limited, NQA Group of Companies, Chair of Safe Work Australia, Asbestos Safety & Eradication Council, a board member of Keystart Loans, CEDA, member of the NRFA Partnership Council, and past President of Chief Executive Women, Australia’s pre-eminent women’s advocacy group. Diane is currently appointed to the three member panel to review the capability of APRA, the banking industry regulator following the findings of the Hayne Royal Commission.

Diane has held a wide range of non-executive roles in the past including Chairman of Broadspectrum, Deputy Chairperson of NBNCo, non-executive director of the CBH Group, commissioner of Tourism WA and board member of the Committee for Perth.

Diane’s last executive role was Group Executive at Westpac. Diane was a General Manager at Westpac for 10 years in the 1990s responsible for back office functions, retail networks and support functions. Prior to re-joining Westpac Diane was a partner at McKinsey & Company in Washington and New Jersey serving clients in diverse industries globally. Diane became a senior advisor to McKinsey in Australia in 2016.

Diane has been active in sports administration and is a past Chairman of both Basketball Australia Limited, the sport’s peak body, and the Australian Sports Drug Agency, the government agency responsible for deterring the use of performance enhancing drugs.

Diane holds an MBA from the University of Sydney and a BEc from the University of Western Australia (UWA). In 2015 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Economics from UWA. She is a Fellow of the AICD and Governance Institute of Australia and an adjunct professor of corporate governance at UWA where she serves on the advisory board of the Business School.

Nicole Duncan | Chief People and Legal Officer - South32

Nicole leads the Human Resources, Legal (including Compliance), and Company Secretariat teams. Nicole commenced with South32 at its inception as Chief Legal Officer and Company Secretary, and has had Human Resources reporting into her since July 2017.

Before joining South32, Nicole held senior roles in BHP Billiton, including Vice President, Company 
Secretariat from 2013 to 2014 and Vice President Supply, Group Information Management from October 2011 to August 2013.

Prior to this she held various legal positions within BHP Billiton in Australia, Houston and The Hague, and she was a lawyer at Ashurst. Nicole holds a degree in Law and an Honours degree in History from the Australian National University.

Tim Cipolloni | Group Manager Treasury - South32

Tim is the Group Manager Treasury at South32, responsible for managing South32’s liquidity, funding requirements and executing their existing US$1B Capital Management Program.

Tim has 18 years of commercial and financial experience, commencing his career in the tax division at Andersen in 2001 and subsequently moving into M&A roles at Western Mining and BHP. During his time at BHP, Tim spent four years living in Canada, firstly working in a commercial role for the Minerals Exploration division and subsequently in the Diamonds and Specialty Products division where he was responsible for managing all commercial activities relating to the development of the Jansen Potash Project supply chain from mine to port. Tim joined the Treasury team at South32 in 2015.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce from Deakin University in Melbourne. Tim has also completed a Masters in Applied Finance from Macquarie University.

Kristen Pelc | Principal Business Development - South32

Kristen is Principal Business Development at South32, working on acquisitions and divestments to optimise the company's portfolio and create growth options. Most recently she was part of the Project Team responsible for the US$1.3 billion dollar acquisition of Arizona Mining.

Prior to joining South32, Kristen was a Senior Consultant in PwC's Deals Team. During her time at PwC she provided both buy and sell side advice on transactions across a broad range of industries including mining, logistics and healthcare.

Kristen holds a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Corporate Finance and Financial Accounting) from the University of Western Australia and received her CA charter in 2016. Kristen is currently completing a Masters in Applied Finance.
